Scott for $1, 400 acres (MAD: sic), part in 5th Dist. of Morgan Co. and part in 3rd Dist. of Scott Co., about 1/2 mile south of where Able Peak lived, crossing Goose Creek Road, crossing Wolf Creek, corner of Scott's entry #1725, said land entered by Julian F. Scott #1797 on 19 Nov. 1835, and by grant #22342 for 500 acres, excluding any of superior title and that J.F. Scott made title to other persons including house and farm where James Bruton formerly lived, containing by estimation "besides the excluding a few acres", 4000 acres more or less; mortgage; Duncan owes Julian F. Scott $2000 by notes of this date due this 27 Nov. 1854, bearing interest, in order to secure payments I am to pay $1000 in bank at Athens and also to pay $500 in Walden Academy of Morgan Co. and remainder $500 according to agreement between J.F. Scott and Jas. S. Duncan this date, held by me Wm. J. Scott, and said Julian F. Scott is to endorse for said Duncan the renewal of $1000 debt; reg. 28 Nov. 1854.

Pg.629-30: Boone Township: H.S. DUNCAN Was born in Morgan Co. TN, July 8, 1843. In the spring of 1846, he removed with his parents to Lawrence county [MO], and there received his education in the common schools. His parents were Dennis K. and Melinda (Hope) Duncan, the former of whom died in 1850, and the latter in 1865. He entered the Confederate service in 1861, ... In 1863, he was taken prisoner and sent to Richmond. After the war he returned to Lawrance county and engaged in school teaching. Coming to Greene county, he taught school here for two years during 1869-70. .... Mr. Duncan was married October 12, 1871, to Miss Mollie C. Robbins, daughter of Harvey Robbins, deceased. TN) and Andrew (X) Prewhit residing in said Morgan Co. TN ... we are now acquainted with Nathaniel Milton ... believe him to be about 73, believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution. Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.
