Pg.432: February 23, 1780, Red Book No. 7, Letter No. 175. (Ben Stoddert, Secry, War Office, to His Excy The Govr Lee). Sir. I have the honor to forward to Your Excellency a return of the officers & men belonging to the State of Maryland, attached to the additional & Independent Corps, therein specified. It may not be unncessary to observe, that the Original returns from which this was taken, were made out some months ago, since which many alterations must undoubtedly have taken place, and of course the present, together with the returns before sent, contain but a very inaccurate State of the Troops of Maryland, attached to the addl. & Independent Corps. (MAD: "Calendar of MD State Papers, The Red Books" by Skordas, Thomas & Peebles, listed the names of the men including James Duncan in Colonel Moses Hazen's Regiment, and referred to this Archives volume and page) (MAD: see Mercer Co.       Pg.377: Queries. ... SUSAN LEAR. I have in my possession an interesting journal kept by a Philadelphia girl, Susan Lear, during a visit to Providence and several places in Massachusetts in 1788. From Philadelphia to Providence she travelled with Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Brown, and is said to have been related to Mrs. Brown (Avis Binney). She was the guest of the Brown family in Providence, and of Gen. Hull in Newton, Mass.
Not long after 1788 Susan Lear married Capt. James Duncan in Philadelphia and they moved to Mercer County, Pa.
From the journal, which mentions many well known people of the time, the Lear Family must have been of some prominence in Philadelphia. can anyone tell me who Susan Lear was? H.E.K., 753 Jefferson Ave., Detroit, Mich.
