Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Pg.84: ANTLE, REV. JOHN, was born April 15, 1789, in Cumberland Co. KY. Elizabeth Buchanan was born in Cumberland Co. PA. Her parents moved to Lincoln Co. KY when she was seven years old. Her father died in that county, and she went to live with a married sister in Cumberland Co. John Antle and Elizabeth Buchanan were there married. They had five children. The family then moved to Morgan Co. IL in 1829, and from there to Sangamon Co., arriving Jan. 9, 1830, in what is now Salisbury township. Pg.758-60: T.S. DUNCAN is one of the leading business men of Salisbury. He has been prominently connected with the mercantile interests of that village, and also devotes considerable attention to farming and stock-raising. Being widely and favorably known throughout the community his many friends will receive this sketch with interest, and we are pleassed to record it in the history of his native county. He was born in Salisbury, May 31, 1854, and is a son of William T.H. Duncan, a native of Adair Co. KY. His grandfather, Marshall Duncan, also a native of that State, was a hatter by trade and with his wife and two children, W.T.H. and James, who were twin brothers, emigrated to Illinois, locating in what was then Menard Co., but is now part of Sangamon County. He entered land and engaged in farming in connection with his trade, and by the pursual of the two occupations became a well-to-do citizen. He was accompanied to his new home in the West by his father, James Duncan, who was a representative of one of the first families of Virginia. Both gentlemen died in Salisbury Township. ...
The wife of William T.H. Duncan, and the mother of our subject, was born in Adair Co. KY, December 11, 1813, and was a daughter of Solomon Miller, who was also a native of Kentucky, where his boyhood days were spent. ... The children of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan, twelve in number, are: Marion M., a fruit farmer and Justice of the Peace of Salisbury; James T., a farmer of Salisbury Township; Polly A., wife of O.R. Baker, of Salisbury; Simeon S., station agent and grain dealer of Atterberry, Menard County; Sarah J., now Mrs. Combs, of Shelby Co. IL; Mrs. Martha M. Cogdall, of Salisbury Township; Margaret, wife of Dr. Purvines, of Salisbury; Mrs. Nancy E. Conner, of Macoupin Co. IL; George W., a farmer of Menard County; Fairinda, now Mrs. Batterton, of Athens; Mrs. Alice E. Yoakum, residing in Washington; and T.S., of this sketch.
Our subject was reared in his native village ... his cousin S.T. Duncan. ... In 1874, in Menard County, Mr. Duncan was united in marriage with Miss Mattie Hodgin, who was born in Texas but was reared in Menard County. She survived her marriage only about a year. .... About 1885 Mr. Duncan purchased the old Miller homestead ... on section 28, Salisbury Township. .... Since the above was written our subject has taken a life partner in the person of Miss Hattie E. Rhodes, daughter of William and Annie Rhodes, the wedding taking place at the bride's home, October 22, 1896.

Throngs Crowd the Church at Funeral Yesterday Morning - City Council Passes Resolution
Frank W. Duncan, mayor of Petersburg and for many years a prominent figure in public life in Menard county, passed away at his home in this city, Monday night, February 22, at the age of 70 years, 2 months and 10 days. Although Mayor Duncan had been in failing health for some time his last illness was but two weeks. He returned from a trip to Hot Springs on February 6, and from that time failed rapidly. On the day of his death he was reported somewhat improved and his sudden demise was a shock to the entire community.
Frank W. Duncan was born in McDonough county, December 15, 1838. The March following his parents came to Salisbury settling in what is now Menard county, in which practically all of his life was spent. He resided on the farm near Salisbury until 1905, when he moved to Petersburg establishing a livery and feed barn. In April 1907 he was elected to the mayoralty of Petersburg and would have stood for reelect at the city election next month had he have lived. He always figured in politics of the county and at one time served as county commissioner being elected to that office on the ticket of the democratic party, with which he was always affiliated. Although when residing near Salisbury his interests were agricultural yet he also engaged in the ministry for the Christian Adventist.
Mr. Duncan's character was one of great vigor and his life was characterized by tireless activities. His business interests were many and varied and his personality made itself felt in his administration of city affairs. He was also philanthropical in his tendencies and he was well known for his generous gifts to the unfortunate.
He was married January 14, 1864, to Martha J. Irwin of Sangamon county, who now survives. To them were born five children; William, who died in infancy, and Jasper M., now in Colorado for his health; Green T. of Divernon, Ill., Mrs. Jennie Hinds of Salisbury, Ill., and Mollie M. at home. There are nine grandchildren. He has living also four brothers and two sisters, F.M. and S.T. Duncan of Salisbury, Ill., J.R. and W.P. of Sherryville, Kan., Mrs. Esther Hohimer of Salisbury and Mrs. Jane Berry of (name of town is unreadable) Mo.
The funeral services were held in the First Presbyterian church, yesterday (Thursday) morning, conducted by Elder William M. Groves, assisted by Rev. John Boden and Rev. Charles McKown in the presence of an audience that taxed the capacity of the auditorium. Business was suspended during the hour of the funeral. Interment was made in Farmer's Point Cemetery.

DOWELL AND DUNCAN
Wednesday evening, December 28, 1898 at the home of the bride, Atterberry, Illinois occurred the marriage of Miss Ida May Duncan and Mr. Frank L. Dowell, Elder Thomas officiating. At the appointed hour, Miss Lucy Lewis played the wedding march while the bridal party entered the parlor and took their positions under a beautiful arch prepared for the occasion, where Elder Thomas performed an impressive ceremony in the presence of over a hundred invited guests. The guests were then escorted to the dining room where a beautiful feast was spread to which all did ample justice.
The happy couple were then recipients of many valuable and useful presents.
Among those present from abroad were Misses Lucy and Lelia Hall, Athens, Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Barton, Assumption, Mr. and Mrs. Napoleon Atwood, Kilbourne, Mess'rs Will Duncan, Freeport, Kansas, J.M. Bohn, Havana, J.C. Walters, Bath, C. Juhl, Columbus, Indiana and about forty from Petersburg.
Thursday's reception was tendered the bridal party at the home of the groom.
The bride is a handsome and estimable young lady and the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Duncan and the groom is a popular and well known young farmer and the son of David Dowell of Little Grove.

Mrs. Duncan Dies in City
Mrs. Martha J. Duncan, Petersburg, died at 5:30 p.m. yesterday at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Victor M. Lankford, 642 West Herndon street, at the age of 86 years, 7 months and fourteen days.
Mrs. Duncan is survived by two sons, Greene T. Duncan, Greenview, and Jasper N. Duncan, Springfield; three brothers, Harve and Oscar Irvin, Cantrall, and Charley, Joplin, Mo.; fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be made later.
