I am
looking for connections to Elizabeth BOYD,
born St. Quivox? about
1840.
Her children had middle names of McMORRAN, CAMPBELL and NICHOLSON,
indicating
her family connections. She was living in New Cumnock, (Ayrshire) by 1867.
Ring
any bells with anyone?
Also,
my ancester Janet Boyd MASON,
grand-daughter of Elizabeth BOYD and
William
MASON, was born illegitimate in 1876, New Cumnock. (Her father
was
not named) She married using the name MASON. (No father was named on
the
certificate)
I found
her on the 1881 Census in New Cumnock living with her Mason grandparents.
BUT
using the name Janet RIDDEL. By coincidence, her mother was working
on a
farm in New Cumnock, and a fellow farm worker was Margaret Paterson
RIDDEL.
Putting 2 and 2 together, I am wondering if Janet's father was
a brother/relative
of this Margaret.
My question
is - how likely was it that an illegitimate child , (aged 5 by the time
of
the
census), would be known by her fathers name, and not the name she was
registered
under? I believe many of the clergy would make an illegitimate person
marry
under their mothers name, even if they had been using their fathers.
Is this
right? That would explain Janet reverting to Boyd, when she married.
