Index to the County Antrim 1803 Agricultural Census
The purpose of the agricultural census was due to the fact that
in 1803 the British authorities were concerned about the possibility
that there could be an invasion of Ireland by the French. In order
to
plan for the defence of the coastline, they took an inventory of
livestock, provisions and equipment so that they would know what was
available for the support of the army....and in case of a retreat,
would know what livestock would have to be driven into the interior,
and what provisions and equipment would have to be removed from the
coast. The census was taken by local constables. Records for two
coastal counties have survived - counties Antrim and Down. The
records for Co Antrim show that the census was completed for 14
parishes in the second half of 1803...it was summarised in Jan 1804.
The census in Co Antrim also privided a list of men available for
yeomanry service.The census forms are held in the National Archives
of Ireland.
