Seeking information on the
parents/family of MELINDA BOYD, b. 1827 - d. 1890,
who married LEWIS DUDLEY GROCE/GROSS
(1823-1862) in Meriwether County, GA.
Melinda and Lewis are in the
1850 Meriwether Co., GA census living next door
to WILLIAM BOYD (1789-1857)
and ROSANNA ---. I have unconfirmed information
that Melinda was the daughter
of this William, who was the son of ROBERT BOYD
(1760-1846) and ROSANNAH STEWART
(1771-1839). Would like to confirm this
information with some kind
of proof.
Melinda and Lewis moved to
Carroll County, GA after 1850. Lewis died during
the Civil War and Melinda
then lived with her son, GEORGE W. GROCE who
married NANCY ANN BOYD b.1863-d.1901,
(ahhh...the plot thickens...). Nancy
was the daughter of ROBERT
BOYD and SARAH ANN LeGUIN (my great-grandparents).
This Robert Boyd (Nancy's
father) was the son of HUGH BOYD and NANCY
(Hopper?) and HUGH BOYD was
the brother of the above mentioned WILLIAM BOYD,
supposedly Melinda's father.
If Melinda is the daughter
of William, then NANCY ANN BOYD and GEORGE
WASHINGTON GROCE were second
cousins (that's what my program says). Just want
to confirm that this was another
case of those cousin-marrying-Boyds behaving
true to form.
Nancy's sister, MELVINA BOYD,
did the same thing ... she married WILLIAM
DAVID SLOAN, son of ROSANNAH
BOYD (sister to Hugh and William) and RICHARD
SLOAN.
The rest of the story ...
Melinda Boyd Groce and some
of her children moved from Carroll County to
Cedartown, GA in Polk County
sometime after 1880 where Melinda died in 1890.
She is buried in Greenwood
Cemetery in Cedartown. Nancy Ann Boyd Groce died
in childbirth in 1901 (the
child died also) and her husband, George W. Groce,
took all his children and
moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma. Nancy Ann Boyd Groce is
also buried at Greenwood Cemetery
in Polk Co., GA.
Information on the Groce family
was received from Virginia Groce Joiner,
granddaughter of Nancy Ann
Boyd and George Washington Groce, who lives in
Oklahoma City. Can anyone
confirm Melinda Boyd Groce's parents?
