Richard
I am the great  great great granddaughter of Duncan W. Boyd, who served in
the 124th NY Volunteers (also known as the Orange Blossoms).  He was
promoted to sergeant when he saved the life of a fellow soldier who was
lying wounded in a burning field during the battle of Gettysburg.  Duncan
had to cross enemy rifle fire to reach the wounded man.   Duncan Boyd was
captured at Totopotomy Creek, Virginia in 1864 and ended up held prisoner
in Andersonville for 11 months. He was about 44 years old at the time and
survived it!  He was born in Riccarton, Ayr, Scotland in 1820.  He was
married to Isabella Ross.  Currently, I am trying to find where he is
buried--I know that it is in Newburgh, NY, but don't know which
cemetery.  He died in 1895.  I am trying to find out when he came to the US
and on which ship.    Thanks for posting the names of Boyd soldiers in the
Civil War!!  Lorraine Corwin

CIVIL WAR VETERAN
PASSES SUDDENLY AWAY

Robert Boyd Taken Suddenly Ill Yes-
terday Morning of Heart Trouble
Lives But a Short Time

Robert Boyd, a veteran of the Civil war,
died yesterday morning at his home, 5 Gage
avenue, at 6 o’clock. Mr. Boyd attended the
Memorial exercises at the Empire theater
Tuesday evening and appeared to be in
usual good health, save from slight
rheumatism, which had been troubling him for
some time. He retired feeling as well as
usual, but was taken suddenly ill at 2 o’clock
with heart difficulty. Dr. D. M. Hall was
called, but medical attendance was of no
avail and death occurred about 6 o’clock.
Robert Boyd was born December 26,
1839 at Bolton, Lake George, and was
therefore a few months over 66 years of
age. His parents were Pliny C. and Martha
(Booth) Boyd. He was one of six children.
