James Boyd (abt. 1801- 1874)
born Jan 29, he was 51 at time of 1851
census ie born 1800-1801 and
William Boyd (abt.1797- 1860?) born Aug 7,
he was 54 at time of 1851
census ie born in 1797-1798 settled in Gore
Township near Lakefield, Argenteuil,
Quebec, Canada in about 1825.
Their name is sometimes given as Boyde.
My ancestors were
A.
George Albert Boyd (b. 1877, Lakefield, Gore), my Grandfather
B.
James Boyd (b. 1832 d. 1877, Lakefield, Gore), my GGrandfather
whose wife was Laura Stevens
and C. James Boyd (born 29 Jan abt 1801,
Ireland d. 1874), my GGGrandfather,
same James Boyd as mentioned above.
1 - I am looking for the place
of birth of the above listed
James Boyd (born Jan
29, ~ 1801) somewhere in Ireland.
2- I would like to also find
the place of birth of his wife
Elizabeth Scott (born Dec
12, (and 45 in 1851 census) ie ~1806)
somewhere in Ireland,
--------------------------
I have the 1831, 1842, 1851,
1861. 1871, and 1881 Census reports of Gore
Township, PQ (or is it QC)
Canada..
1831 Census
Both William and James Boyd are shown living in Gore (LDS File
1375923
at frames 1806-1808). James
Boyd is listed as having 100 acres but no
farm data is given for him
(his entry is squeezed in between two
others). 5 persons were shown
as living with him. Land ownership rights
do not appear indicated. No
ages given either.
1840 Land Grants
In Ref "GS 15.3 Q4 1891" List
of Grantees of Land by the Crown, both
William and James are listed
as grantees in 1840. See the index and
pages referred to (341 and
363) on page 30 of "printed list". I assume
you will be getting the full
record of these grants.
1842 Census Gore Argenteuil
James Boyd Family
LDS Film 1375934 at
"1231" James is listed with 9 persons on farm. On
page 7 of that record
it clearly states that he is on the land as a
"free" i.e., I believe this
means a freeholder, as against adjacent
entries that show "squatters"
and "tenants". James Boyd is given as
having been 17 years in the
Province, so he came to Quebec in about
1825. Well, he was married
in Montreal in 1825, so this makes sense.
But, no ages are given.
William Boyd Family
William Boyd with 9 others
(17 years in the Province) was a "free"
holder, not a squatter or
tenant. Thus, he came to Quebec Province in
1825 (1232 (Page 29 of Enumeration
District 17) of Film #1375934).

1861 Census
Enumeration District One,
Township of Gore, James Boyd, now 60 and Mary
Ann Boyd, widow of William
Boyd listed.
1871 Census
James and Elizabeth Boyd give
their ages as 67 and are listed. Looks
like son, James Boyd, is running
the farm. (LDS Film #493444)
I don't see anything else in
the census reports that will help in this
search
In his book C. Thomas Boyd
states that James and William were brothers.
Thomas' statement is backed
by a land description "center of Gore on road
from Lakefield to Lachute".
That's pretty specific. It would seem that
Thomas had some detailed information
at his disposal. (I need a detailed
map of the area of Gore and
Lakefield, i.e., the township of Gore.) If
one believes that these are
the William and James mentioned by C. Thomas
in his 1896 History of Lakefield/Gore,
it is interesting that William
family is Methodist and James
family is Episcopalian. Well, there are no
other Williames or Jameses
of the appropriate age in the 1851 Census, so
I conclude that William and
James were brothers on the basis of Thomas'
statement..
Moreover, it relates the brother
in a special way with adjacent
properties. I would believe
it. I now have a copy of a detailed map of
the area of Gore and Lakefield,
i.e., the township of Gore, right down
to "land plots" and James
BOYD had three or four plots right next to
Echo Lake and his "brother"
William's plot is right next to him.
My James BOYD (1801-1874) died
9 Mar 1874, and was buried 12 Mar 1874. I
believe his death and burial
record is from Holy Trinity Church, Lakefield. I have
a copy of the parish record,
but it is poor and doesn't even give his age. LDS File
#1992751 at 01141 (for some
reason I also note 1131).
